| The Associated Press DENVER - A registered nurse from Lafayette said Tuesday he will challenge former U.S. Attorney Tom Strickland for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate. Bruce Poulter, 47, said he is a fiscal conservative who wants to return the Senate to its roots as representing the public, not well-financed special interests. "I'm offering a refreshing alternative to politics as usual," he said. The winner of a primary between Strickland and Poulter will likely face incumbent Republican Sen. Wayne Allard during the general election. Allard announced his candidacy for a second term earlier this month; he has no primary opponent so far. Also running is Libertarian Rick Stanley of Denver. Poulter acknowledged he has no political experience, but said he is accustomed to hard work, having run his own physical rehabilitation business for the past 10 years. Poulter also has scheduled campaign stops in Sterling and Pueblo on Tuesday and Grand Junction today. |
