Public Housing
by Rick Stanley

Everyone needs shelter. Housing is a basic human need. People who wish to obtain adequate shelter must be allowed to earn it with their own labor.

Current federal programs pursued under the rubric of "affordable" housing are an abject failure, and in actuality are designed to keep lower-income workers in their place. I want to make "their place" their own place, as a property owner.

The federal government has no business being a landlord. The 10th Amendment says that if the federal government has no specific delegated authority to enact particular legislation – and in the case of public housing the federal government has no such authority – then the power to pass such legislation falls to the States, or to the People.

I call upon the Congress of the United States to put an immediate end to all the unconstitutional federal housing subsidies. It's not their money to give.

As your U.S. Senator, I will propose a New Homestead Act. I will get the federal government out of the housing business by allowing Americans to buy units in existing federal housing facilities as their own starter homes. These hard-working families will take pride in their own private property. Within a few years they will beautify the ugly sores Congress has created with its illegal public housing scam, while building equity – and wealth – for themselves.

This will be done by allowing federally-backed loans through free market banking institutions at a low interest rate. Guaranteeing these loans will promote every American's ability to qualify.
