Federal
Lands
or, Uncle Sam Wants You to be a Landowner
by Rick Stanley
| The federal government owns 39% of all the
land in Colorado. In many states the percentage is higher
still. Why is the federal government in the landowning business? Why does the federal government own warehouses, office buildings, and undeveloped land outside of National Parks, National Monuments, federal buildings, military bases, etc? I am proposing a New Homestead Act which will require the federal government to sell all the property it shouldn't have. All of these lands will be sold at market value to American citizens not to foreign interests, or to corporations. These properties will be sold to the American people. This is your country, and you ought to have a piece of it. This will be done by allowing federally-backed loans through free market banking institutions at a low interest rate. Guaranteeing these loans will promote every American's ability to qualify. With the New Homestead Act in place, the American dream of owning a small farm or ranch in a rural environment will once again be within the reach of every American. To
